"If you're using a tripod, it's important to use the center column so that the camera doesn't move from side to side," she says. "And use a cable release or self-timer so you don't have to keep pressing the button."

For more casual shots where features like movement or natural light are more prominent in the image, Doucet suggests setting your camera to aperture-priority auto mode and adjusting your ISO as needed. "It's also helpful to bracketing your shots—taking multiple photos at different exposure levels so you can choose the one with the most pleasing results," she says. And when shooting in low light situations, Doucet recommends turning off Auto Focus and relying on manual focusing instead.

"RAW photography allows you to recover lost detail in the photo after it's been taken," says Ashley. This can give your images a more polished look and make them easier to edit later on.
